Sea Glass Statement Necklace | Recycled Vintage Costume Jewelry Assemblage

At the center of the design is about ¾ of a vintage broken cateye bolder marble (which could be deemed broken junk) surrounded by sea glass beads, gold tone shell charms, bookended with two glowing droplets of turquoise glass formerly Pente game pieces, and the dangling pieces painted with wavy swirls in shades of turquoise were parts off a 1990s necklace.

There is so much to enjoy with this sea glass statement necklace!  The body of this assemblage is 3 ¾” x 3”.  This piece adjusts in length from 18” to 21” with a spring ring and tail clasp so it will work with many necklines.  However, this necklace can also hang on a wall or be shown off in a display case.

Sea Glass Defined:

Naturally produced sea glass is created when pieces of glass are tumbled in the ocean.  Over time, these broken bottles, glass net floats, or other glass items are rolled along through the sea until all their edges are rounded off.   The watery slickness of the glass gives way to a frosted appearance with the feel of satin.

Story Behind the Art:

The sea glass beads in this statement necklace were acquired from a broken necklace from the 90s.  It was one of my favorite ocean memories with my children starting when they were 4 years old.

We were staying at a condo perched on an Oregon coastal cliff; and there was a trail down to the ocean edge and a tiny cove only exposed when the tide was out.  I and my son ventured out and found “sea treasure!”  We spent hours picking bits up.  By the amount of our haul, it had been many years since someone had harvested!  Another year, at a different location when my husband & son were flying kites, my 5 year old daughter and I spent several happy hours finding not only glass sea treasure, but tiny shells, too.
